I coined the term ‘Venture Communism’ in 2001 to promote the ideal of workers’ self-organization of production as a way of addressing class conflict. Telekommunisten is a collective based in Berlin, Germany, where I have lived since 2003. I first encountered the term ‘Telekommunisten’ (which became the name of the collective) in 2005, while visiting the apartment of a friend. He and his roommate had given the name ‘Telekommunisten’ to the local area network used in their apartment to share internet access. | J'ai forgé le terme "entreprise communiste" en 2001 pour promouvoir l'idéal de l'auto-organisation des travailleurs en tant que moyen de penser le conflit de classe. | |
Telekommunisten had been used as a derogatory term for Germany’s former state telephone company, Deutsch Telekomm, which is now a private transnational corporation whose ‘T-Mobile’ brand is known worldwide. The usage of communist here is intended to cast the telephone company as a monolithic, authoritarian, and bureaucratic behemoth. This is a completely different understanding to the positive use of the term as an engagement in class conflict towards the goal of a free society without economic classes, where people produce and share as equals, a society with no property and no state, that produces not for profit, but for social value. In this way, we are not simply a collective of worker-agitators toiling in the sphere of telecommunications. Telekommunisten promotes the notion of a distributed communism: a communism at a distance, a Tele-communism. A venture commune is not bound to one physical location where it can be isolated and confined. Similar in topology to a peer-to-peer network, Telekommunisten intends to be decentralized, with only minimal coordination required amongst its international community of producer-owners. | Telekommunisten était un terme péjoratif utilisé pour parler de l'ancienne compagnie nationale de télécommunication allemande, Deutsche Telekomm, qui est aujourd'hui une multinationale privée, et dont la marque "T-Mobile" est mondialement connue. L'usage du mot "communiste", en l’occurrence, prétend caractériser l'opérateur téléphonique comme un mastodonte monolithique, autoritaire et bureaucratique. C'est une acception complètement étrangère à l'utilisation positive du terme comme engagement dans le conflit de classe en vue d'une société libre sans classes économiques, au sein de laquelle les individus produisent et partagent en égaux, une société sans propriété et sans État, qui ne produit pas en vue du profit mais de la valeur sociale. En ce sens, nous ne sommes pas un simple collectif de travailleurs-agitateurs, tâcherons de la sphère des télécommunications. Telekommunisten promeut l'idée d'un communisme distribué: un communisme à distance, un Télé-communisme. Une entreprise commune ne se réduit pas à un endroit physique dans lequel elle peut être isolée et confinée. Semblable dans sa topologie à un réseau de pair à pair, Telekommunisten se veut décentralisé, avec seulement la coordination minimal requise au sein de sa communauté internationale de producteur-propriétaires. |
