I've decided to attack the tree and footer next, as those are the other main graphical elements at the moment that will begin to shape the skin. I'm leaving the afore-mentioned menubar for the moment as I want to see what looks best when I've got the content I want in it.
For the tree then, I'll copy across some more folders from the default skin - namely one called "tree" from graphics/interface. You can see in there that there are two folders, each having bar_top, bar_middle and bar_left inside them. These will make up the tree in exactly the same way as the left, middle and right sections make up the titlebar we saw above - the difference obviously being that the whole thing is on a 90 degree rotation to that bar.
The top part of the tree is always going to be visible in game (unless you're viewing a match in TV Mode) and the bottom part comes in on any screen where you have "actions" to choose from (such as manager interaction, ask to pick etc). Personally I think it would be better if they had just three sections to the tree, instead of adding a bottom section when the actions are visible, but because that's not the way it's set out, I'm basically going to copy the way the tree is formed in the default skin.
To this end, I actually open the top/top part of the tree in Photoshop and create my own tree over the top of that to get the dimensions the same, and then delete the original tree layer when I'm ready to save it. Because the top/middle part of the tree will fill the space between the top/top and top/bottom parts, I'm going to cut my tree to the minimum height, because there's no design element making it necessary for me to keep it at 409px.
When the tree is put together, I have exactly the same form as the default skin - a rounded top and angled bottom. When there are actions visible though, the bottom section of the tree meet up with the top, creating a seamless join, and ending in a rounded bottom, the whole thing looks like this:

This should make it obvious that I'm going for a skin that is darker than the default one, but I'm not going to play around with the colours of the text just yet. Instead, the footer is next, and so I start by copying the relevant folder (graphics/interface/footer) across from the default skin. This follows the same old system by having a three section bar inside it, this time with a height of 46px.
As I always end up doing, I shall be moving around some of the functions normally visible in a skin, and in this instance, it means that I will only have one level of functions placed in the footer. Because of this, I'm effectively cutting the footer in half, height-wise, so my three footer graphics are just 26px high. I've not touched the coding yet, so my footer is now out of place, but I'll start moving those functions about, allowing me to put the footer in the correct location, in the next update. This leaves my skin looking like this for the moment:
